His stomach growled with hunger pangs. Not long after searching, Wil found a thick bush of wild raspberries. The berries would soon be out of season, but he found enough plump berries to make a palatable breakfast. He hungrily popped the berries into his mouth as quickly as he could pull them off the bush. They were juicy and sweet. Soon, his fingers were stained red.

Wil stopped his breakfast and touched the mat of hair on his head, stiff with Byron’s blood. Last night’s events seemed like they had taken place long ago, or had happened to another person. It was easy for Wil to imagine he was watching someone else’s life play out before him instead of his own. He thought about Tye and Candace and felt his throat tighten up. He thought he was going to cry again, but swallowing hard, he forced himself not to. He wiped his hands on his dirty trousers and ate a few more berries before picking up his sword and heading off.
Where was he going?
Wil stopped and thought about it. His only intention last night was to escape from the men that would surely kill him. Now, for the first time, Wil realized that he had nowhere to go. Grundy was dead. He no longer had a home. He could perhaps scratch out some sort of existence in the Ardmore for a few months, but then winter would come. It was then that Wil started to cry. He knew nothing of the world outside of Hanging Tree and didn’t really know the way to Kestrel or Coldstream or one of the other villages. Even if he found his way, what would he do there? The thought suddenly occurred to him that the people in the other villages would hear about the boy that cut off the hand of one of the Guardsmen. He realized that he was just as dead at any of the other villages as he was at Hanging Tree. Perhaps he could work odd jobs or beg until he was old enough to join the Guardsmen, he told himself. In the back of his mind, he realized that the Guardsmen would not want anything to do with a poor beggar boy, no matter how old he was, but Wil tried not to think about it. He looked down at the sword in his hand and smiled weakly. Anything was possible. And at any rate, it beat starving or freezing to death in the Ardmore. The only problem with his plan was that he didn’t know how to get to Castlebridge. Feeling suddenly tired, he started walking, slumping off into the forest.
